ITINERARY Explore Tambopata & Sandoval Lake

DAY 1 – MONKEY ISLAND & MADRE DE DIOS RIVER

DAY 1. Monkey Island & Madre de Dios River

🛬 Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, we’ll pick you up from the airport or bus station and head to the Monte Amazónico Lodge office. You can repack and leave large suitcases behind to travel lighter.

🚤 After a short briefing, we board a boat for a one-hour ride along the Madre de Dios River. At the lodge, enjoy a welcome juice and settle into your room.

🐒 In the afternoon, we’ll visit Monkey Island, home to capuchins and squirrel monkeys. We’ll cross the river and hike trails where you may witness social behavior in the wild.

🌙 After dinner, we set off on a nighttime boat ride to spot white caimans on the sandbanks. With some luck, we’ll also see capybaras, the world’s largest rodent.

DAY 2. SANDOVAL LAKE & TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE

🚶‍♂️ We begin the day with a hearty breakfast and hike 3 km through the dense rainforest. Our goal is the spectacular Sandoval Lake, one of the largest in Tambopata National Reserve.

🛶 We’ll go on a peaceful paddle boat tour to admire wildlife. Expect to see birds like hoatzins, cormorants, jacanas, and herons, as well as monkeys like howlers, squirrel monkeys, and capuchins. If we’re lucky, we may spot endangered giant river otters and massive 4-meter-long caimans.

🍽️ After this unique encounter, we return to the lodge for a traditional Amazonian lunch and a chance to reflect on the experience.

🌌 In the evening, we take a night walk. With flashlights and sharp ears, we search for insects, frogs, reptiles, and other nocturnal creatures active in the dark jungle.

DAY 3. CANOPY WALK-WAY, ZIPLINE & KAYAKING ON THE MADRE DE DIOS RIVER

🌅 At 5:30 a.m., we head to the Canopy Walk-Way for an early morning adventure. Walking above the treetops over 30 meters high, we enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River. We spot colorful birds such as toucans, macaws, and tanagers.

🎢 After breakfast, it’s time for ziplining! We glide from platform to platform above the jungle canopy, fully equipped and guided by an expert. It’s an adrenaline-filled experience that connects you with the forest’s vibrant energy.

🎣 In the afternoon, we try traditional fishing in the river, a relaxing moment where we may catch catfish or piranhas. Later, we paddle a kayak across the calm waters of the river.

🌅 The day ends with a stunning sunset over the river, a perfect blend of peace and wonder.

DAY 4. MACAW CLAY LICK & RETURN TO THE CITY

🌄 We start our final morning with a boat trip to the Macaw Clay Lick. This natural phenomenon takes place on a clay wall by the Madre de Dios River, where hundreds of colorful parrots gather at sunrise to feed. The mix of movement, color, and sound is truly magical.

🐦 From our comfortable seats, we quietly watch the birds arrive in waves—parakeets, blue-headed parrots, and vibrant macaws, all creating a spectacle of jungle harmony.

☕ We return to the lodge for a relaxed breakfast. It’s the perfect moment to reflect, share stories with fellow travelers, or simply soak in the jungle one last time.
