We depart very early from Cusco towards Manu on a scenic drive
through the Andes, passing through picturesque rural communities.
We will visit the enigmatic pre-Incan tombs of the Lupaca culture and
explore the charming colonial town of Paucartambo, where
we will visit its interesting museum. We will have lunch in the heart of the cloud forest,
home to the Andean cock-of-the-rock, Peru’s national bird, the elusive spectacled bear,
orchids, and ferns. At the end of the day, we will arrive at our accommodation at Pilcopata Inn, where we will spend our first night surrounded by nature.
After breakfast, we’ll hike through the forest to observe birds and monkeys in their natural habitat, as well as visit a coca plantation and a wildlife rescue center. Then, we’ll depart by boat from Puerto Atalaya along the Alto Madre de Dios River, enjoying birdwatching with species such as herons, cormorants, and vultures. Upon arrival at our lodge, we’ll have time for a refreshing swim in the river and a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll visit a swamp ideal for observing toucans, macaws, and more. At dusk, we’ll embark on an exciting excursion to observe the gleaming eyes of caimans. Optional fishing is available.
Very early in the morning, we’ll board the boat to the parrot clay lick, where hundreds of birds, including macaws, parakeets, and parrots, gather to feed on mineral clay. After this unique experience, we’ll return to the lodge for breakfast and later embark on a 2.5- to 3-hour hike through the rainforest to continue discovering its rich biodiversity. After lunch and a well-deserved rest or swim in the river, those who wish can enjoy a zipline adventure. In the afternoon, we’ll visit Lake Machuwasi, where we’ll board rustic rafts to spot hoatzins—prehistoric birds—and possibly monkeys or capybaras. At night, we’ll take a night hike in search of wildlife.
After an early breakfast, we’ll say goodbye to the jungle and board a boat to Puerto Atalaya. From there, we’ll begin our return journey to Cusco in a private vehicle. We’ll arrive in the afternoon, our memories filled with the landscapes, wildlife, and unforgettable experiences of the Peruvian Amazon.
